Whoa. A metal laptop with a 240 hertz screen for about a thousand bucks? It says Gaming Edition. The missing graphics card would like a word. Meet the Mechrevo Unbounded 15X Blizzard Gaming Edition. Say that three times fast. 15.3-inch laptop, listed at 6,999 yuan, about 1,048 dollars, for light gaming and everyday work in China. This is Tech After Dark. We read seven reports and spec pages so you don't have to.

Hands-ons watched: zero, because none exist yet. Hands touched: also zero. Three new things! Number one: a 2.5K screen at 240 hertz! It redraws 240 times a second. Double Mechrevo's own pricier Pro Blizzard. Number two: three power modes. 25, 45 or 65 watts! Quiet and cool for spreadsheets, full power for games. Two heat pipes do the cooling. And three, my favorite: spare slots! Add more R A M and storage yourself later.

Asus and M S I rivals with this chip solder their R A M down. Point, raccoon. Plus a number pad, R G B and full-size arrows in full metal. Shiny. Specs. A M D's Ryzen A I 9 365, ten cores, up to 5 gigahertz. Heavy multitasking? On paper, easy. Okay, and the graphics card? There isn't one. It's the built-in Radeon 880M. Wait. A gaming Edition, with no graphics card? Notebookcheck's 880M benchmark page says well over 30 frames a second in Once Human at 1080p Low.

Okay, but the screen hits 500 nits, it's matte, and it weighs 1.68 kilos! Bright enough for a sunny room, much lighter than most gaming laptops. And an 80 watt-hour battery. So what did reviewers find? Nobody's tested it yet. Notebookcheck's report says its edge over the Zenbook is a faster-refreshing I P S panel and expandable memory. Ha! Faster screen, more slots. I knew it. Same report: the rivals ship with 24 or 32 gigs.

This has 16. Oh no. But the graphics chip is decent, right? Notebookcheck says the 880M delivers almost as much performance as an entry-level desktop graphics card. Lighter gaming? Sure. Price time! How many shiny coins? 6,999 yuan listed, about 1,048 dollars. A 500-yuan coupon drops it to 6,499. Shut up and take my yuan! Nova's Catch: it's China only. No international price or release yet. Borrowing it means a long flight.

Versus! Asus Zenbook S 16 and M S I Prestige A16 A I+. Same chip! Zenbook: 24 gigs, a 120 hertz oled, lighter at 1.5 kilos. M S I: 32 gigs, 165 hertz, 2.02 kilos. Verdict: wait. Untested, China only, and 16 gigs. I'm giving it a 6.0. I say 7.2! That screen and those slots are shiny. After Dark Score: 6.6. Fifth on our laptop board, just under the X P S 16 Creator Edition. Night, raccoon.
