Whoa. Sixteen inches of shiny aluminum, on the wall? Gorgeous. Also five hundred bucks before you buy a stand to put it on. Amazon's Echo Show 16: the fanciest Echo Show yet, built to run a family's house. We read eight write-ups, four of them hands-ons. Zero hands touched. Zero raccoon hands, sadly. This is Tech After Dark! Three new things! One: an optional Nanomatte screen with over ninety percent less glare.
Amazon's number, no baseline given. But sunny kitchens, rejoice. Two: the body is nearly forty percent thinner. Reviewers say it looks like an iMac! A smart speaker that wants to be a Mac when it grows up. Three: night vision, a first for Echo Show, and face recognition from seventeen feet! Up from eight feet. It spots you across the room and shows your calendar. Plus your Alexa chats save as cards, and there's a 3D map of your house!
Specs. Sixteen-inch Full H D: room for a recipe, a calendar or a show. Fire T V built in, remote included. Netflix in the kitchen! Ten speakers: eight tiny woofers, two tweeters. On paper, that should sound fuller than most smart displays. And a thirteen megapixel camera that follows you around on calls! Plus twenty percent more computing power. Which chip? Compared to what? Silence. Mystery chip. Very shiny mystery chip.
Tom's Guide's Mike Prospero went hands-on: Amazon's most refined smart display he's seen. Yes. He loved the new interface! He also called the price and the stand a lot to ask. But the Home Map! With Ring cameras it shows people and cars moving around. Tom's Guide's verdict: both cool and a bit creepy. The Shortcut says the sound's impressively loud. TechRadar loved how the hardware and software fit.
Engadget noticed the slimmer body in person. They didn't test the glare, though. Price: four ninety-nine ninety-nine, or five sixty-nine ninety-nine with Nanomatte. Preorders get a hundred off. A hundred off! When does it ship? Tomorrow? 'Later this year.' U S only. TechRadar says mid-December. Now, Nova's Catch. Stand's extra: seventy bucks, or one twenty-five. Some features need Alexa Plus, meaning Prime or a subscription.
Oh no. And the new interface is coming to other Echo Shows anyway? Yep. Versus: Apple's HomeView is two hundred cheaper with an A18 chip, and a seven-inch screen. Seven inches! And versus the Echo Show 15, TechRadar says it's forty percent slimmer. Verdict: wait. Gorgeous, but a mystery chip, no firm ship date, and a pricey stand. Six point four. Seven point four! It's shiny. But okay, wait for full reviews.
After Dark Score: six point nine. First ever on our smart-home board. Number one! Now, about borrowing that demo unit.
