Whoa. An oled iPad mini. It's tiny, it glows, and I need it. It's gorgeous. It also costs a hundred dollars more, again. It's Apple's new iPad mini with the A20 Pro chip, from six ninety-nine. For people who want a tablet in one hand: reading, video, notes. This is Tech After Dark: three hands-ons, five more reports, zero hands touched it. New thing one: the first oled screen ever on an iPad mini! Each oled pixel makes its own light, so black is truly black.

Peak brightness more than doubles. And it's bigger! 8.5 inches, thinner bezels, about the same body. Thing two: optional nano-texture glass. A matte finish, like the iPad Pro, that cuts reflections outdoors. Thing three: IP67! Rain, spills, dust. Basically built for my dumpster lifestyle. Keep it out of the dumpster. It's also 5.4 millimeters thin, down from 6.3. And the bass! Woofers built into the screen.

Gizmodo felt it vibrate in their palms! The A20 Pro chip: Apple claims up to 60 percent faster C P U. Fine print: only the 512 gig model gets six cores. Wait. Seriously? The cores depend on storage? Yep. Plus 255 grams, light enough for one-handed reading, and up to 10 hours of battery. So what did people who actually held it say? Gizmodo put it best: oled just looks fantastic. And The Verge says the matte finish all but erases reflections!

The Verge also notes it's still 60 hertz, so scrolling's less smooth than 120. Oh no. And it's still Touch I D, not Face I D? The Verge calls that a bummer. Gizmodo adds older Apple Pencils won't work. Okay, rip the bandage off. What's it cost? From 699 dollars for Wi-Fi, 849 dollars with cellular, 649 dollars for education. Pre-orders are open; it ships November 6. Six ninety-nine for oled? Honestly, that's not bad!

Nova's Catch: that's a hundred more than last time, after an earlier hike this year. Still 128 gigs. Oh no. Please tell me the matte glass is cheap. A hundred more, only on 256 and 512 gig models. And the Smart Folio's 79 bucks. Versus! The old A17 Pro mini is still a hundred bucks cheaper. But it's L C D and peaks at 500 nits. This one hits 1,200. And Samsung's Galaxy Tab Season 11? 799 dollars, a hundred more, for a bigger Android tablet.

Verdict! Gorgeous screen, water resistant, tiny. I'm a 7.8, and I want one. Six point five. Great screen, sixty hertz, and a price that keeps climbing. After Dark Score: 7.2. Number two in laptops and tablets, behind the MacBook Pro. A buy if you read in bed. Just keep him out of the store.
