Apple's First Folding iPhone: Worth $1,999?

Whoa. An iPhone that folds. Apple actually did it! And it costs more than any iPhone Apple has ever sold. This is the iPhone Duo: a 5.4-inch phone that opens into a 7.6-inch mini-tablet. From 1,999 dollars, for iPhone fans who want a big screen without switching to Android. It's Tech After Dark! We read six reviews plus Apple's announcement, and zero hands touched it. Rocco's paws aren't allowed near anything this expensive.

New thing one: the first foldable iPhone. Apple says the open screen is fifty percent bigger than a Pro Max. Two: a matte nano-texture inner screen. It's anti-glare, so reflections fade, and reviewers say the crease mostly hides. Gizmodo says the crease basically disappears! Where'd it go? I need to find it. Reviewers say you spot it when the screen's off. So, never turn it off. Three: Split View! Two apps side by side, a first for iPhone.

Or a video pinned above another app. 9to5Mac calls it the best multitasking ever on an iPhone. Netflix up top, Slack down below. My boss will never know. He will. Also, Face I D is gone. Touch I D is back, on the side button. Specs. Both screens redraw 120 times a second, so scrolling's smooth, and hit 3,000 nits, so sunlight's fine. And the chip? Tell me it's the good one. The A20 Pro, same as the 1,199 dollar iPhone 18 Pro.

As fast as Apple's best phone. So it's light too, right? Raccoon-pocket friendly? 254 grams. Heavier than a Pro Max, and way heavier than a Galaxy Z Fold 8 at 201. Oh no. My poor little wrist. And it's 11.3 millimeters closed, about 29 percent thicker than an iPhone 18 Pro. Okay, cameras! Two 48-megapixel shooters and 4K video at 120 frames a second! And no telephoto lens. Far-away shots? Walk closer.

Engadget scored it 8.8 out of 10, praising the design, the cameras and that matte screen. They clocked 28 hours 48 minutes of video, about half an hour more than the Fold 8. Battery win! Admit it, Nova. The Verge disagrees. It says the phone runs hot, and doubts it lasts a heavy day. Its verdict: one of Apple's messiest first-generation products in a long time. But Gizmodo gave it Editor's Choice and said it's worth the wait!

Price: 1,999 dollars for 256 gigs, up to 3,199 dollars at the top. Sales start October 23rd. Or 83.29 dollars a month for two years. I'll just borrow it, monthly. Nova's Catch: reviewers say apps are still catching up. Older ones show black bars on the big screen. Wait. Seriously? On a two-thousand-dollar phone? Seriously. And Apple Pencil support? Later this year. Not at launch. Versus! The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is 99 dollar cheaper, and way lighter.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has a real telephoto, up to 30 times zoom, and an 8-inch inner screen. And Samsung's Fold8 Ultra costs 100 dollars more. See? The Duo's a bargain! Verdict: wait. It's gorgeous, but it's heavy, it's pricey, and apps aren't ready. Seven from me. Eight and a half from me! After Dark Score: 7.8. The first phone on our board! Rocco, stop trying to fold the T V. See you next time.
